Choosing the Right Laser Safety Glasses
A Practical Guide
What do I need to know about laser safety eyewear?
Laser beams have specific wavelengths (nm) to which protective safety goggles must be precisely matched to. Particularly dangerous: UV and infrared rays, as they are invisible to the eye invisible to the eye and do not trigger an eyelid closure reflex!Laser protection classes
The laser protection class must be marked on all CE-certified laser devices as shown. Devices with laser protection class 1 do not emit any dangerous laser radiation.
Operating Modes
Lasers can work in different operating modes:D
Continuous wave laser
CW-Laser
> 0,25 s
I
Pulse Laser
Q-Switched/Mode-locked
> 1 µs - 0,25 s
R
Giant Pulse Laser
> 1 ns - 1 µs
M
Mode Locked Pulsed Laser
< 1 ns
Certification of laser safety eyewear
Laser safety eyewear must be certified in accordance with DIN EN 207.The protection level shows that the glasses withstand standardized tests (5 seconds of irradiation or 50 pulses) for a specific wavelength with corresponding power.Example: | > 315 - 532 | DIRM | LB6 |
| Wavelength range | Operating Mode(s) | LB-Value |
Wavelength coverage
Laser safety goggles can only cover certain wavelength ranges with the required protection level, especially in the visible range. It is therefore possible that several pairs of goggles are required for one laser device. The right safety eyewear frame
A well-designed frame ensures safety, comfort and optimum visibility - especially when working with laser devices for long periods of time. This must be CE-certified and bear a CE mark.Do you need some help?
